The short version
Matcha is made for children, so privacy should not depend on a child understanding a long legal document. A parent or guardian manages the family account, purchases, and important privacy choices. Children can read, play, and learn without being asked for unnecessary personal details.
What a child does not need to give us
A child does not need to give Matcha a personal email address, payment-card information, home address, school, phone number, precise location, or full legal name just to enjoy our stories and learning experiences. Parents should use a nickname or simple display name for reader profiles.
What Matcha may remember
- Reading or activity progress so a child can continue where they left off.
- Preferences such as language or display settings where a feature supports them.
- Anonymous product events such as a story being opened or completed, whether narration worked, or whether a page loaded slowly.
Reading progress can be associated with a parent-managed reader profile because that is a product feature. Our analytics event stream is different: it is designed not to contain the child's account ID or profile ID.
How we improve Matcha without following children around
We want to know whether children can finish a story, where an experience becomes confusing, whether audio fails, which activities are useful, and whether a new design works better. We can learn this from anonymous, session-scoped product events and aggregate statistics.
We do not use child-facing Matcha experiences for behavioural advertising, cross-site tracking, session replay, keystroke recording, or advertising profiles. We do not sell children's personal information.
Parents and guardians are in control
Adults should create and manage the Matcha family account and complete purchases. Where a law requires parental consent or age-assurance steps before a child can use a feature, Matcha will apply those steps to the relevant market and experience. We prefer privacy-preserving approaches and do not want to collect identity documents or biometric information unless a feature truly requires stronger age assurance and it can be implemented lawfully and proportionately.
Sharing and service providers
We may use carefully selected providers to host Matcha, authenticate accounts, process payments, deliver email, or operate other infrastructure. They may receive only the information needed for the service they provide. We do not share children's activity with advertising networks for targeted advertising.
Photos, voices, drawings, and AI features
Some future Matcha experiences may let families create things with generative or interactive tools. A child's prompt, drawing, photo, or voice can be personal information. Unless a feature clearly explains otherwise and the required adult permission is obtained, Matcha will not treat identifiable child-created material as training data for general-purpose models. We will design those features to minimize what needs to be uploaded and how long it is retained.
Deleting a child's information
A parent or guardian may ask to access, correct, or delete a reader profile and associated information. Email [email protected] from the adult account email where possible. Please do not send extra identity documents or child information unless we specifically need the minimum information required to verify the request.
For children
If Matcha asks for something that feels too personal, ask a grown-up first. You never need to tell us where you live, where you go to school, or how to pay for something just to enjoy a Matcha story.
